Slave - A question of freedom

Adaptation of Mende Nazer's book Slave

Performed by Feelgood Theatre Production at the Federation of International Human Rights Museums (FIHRM) 2011 conference.

Slave – A Question of Freedom is an adaptation of Mende Nazer’s book Slave and it packs a serious punch!

Winner of the Pete Postlethwaite Award for Best New Play this production had its world premier in The Lowry, Salford before transferring to London and subsequent national tour.  It was performed in the House of Lords and soon to be seen at the UN.

In the Nuba Mountains of contemporary Sudan, life is still a good fire around which stories are told - until the raiders come.  They burn the village, murder, rape and abduct the children to be sold into slavery. Twelve year old Mende was one of those children.  Stripped of her name and freedom she was a domestic slave for seven years with only the floor of a garden shed as her bed and leftovers from her masters table as her food.  In 2000, she was passed on to a diplomat’s family in London. She escaped, only to face a new struggle for asylum.

Her moving story is vividly and sensitively told by eight international actors.  It is a theatrical feast of storytelling, music and dance which celebrates the ancient Nuba culture and Mende’s indomitable spirit in the face of shattered dreams.  Mende’s story reveals the horror of the 21st century slave trade and challenges us all to consider what is it to be free?
